Travel Logistics

Transportation

To begin the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, you should first travel to Pokhara. You can take a bus to Pokhara from Kathmandu, which takes about 7 to 8 hours.  The enchanting sceneries of the diverse landscapes of Nepal can be seen during this scenic bus ride.  Every moment of the journey is exciting and will captivate you.  Similarly, you can also opt for a 25 to 30 minute flight to Pokhara. The flight is scenic and you will get an opportunity to witness the aerial views of beautiful rolling hills and mountains.

After you make it to Pokhara, you will stay overnight and then take a drive to Nayapul on the following day which is the starting point of the trek. Then, after you complete the trek, you will again drive back to Pokhara from Nayapul. Similarly, when returning to Kathmandu, you can take a bus taking the same route back again or choose a 25 to 30 minute flight back. Physical Preparation and Trek Difficulty

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek is considered moderately challenging. You will traverse the rugged and steep sections in some parts of the trek. In addition, you will walk for 6 to 7 hours per day on average. So, physical fitness is required for the smooth completion of the trek. While the ABC Trek is rewarding, it is also important to consider the trek difficulties and handle them with adequate preparation.

You can prepare for the trek by including strength and cardiovascular exercises at least 3 or 4 weeks before embarking on the journey. Strength training helps you improve endurance and stability, which is crucial while trekking in high-altitude zones.

You can incorporate strength exercises such as planks, lunges, push ups, pull ups, squats etc.  Similarly, you can also include cardiovascular exercises such as swimming, cycling, jogging, climbing the stairs etc which will help you increase stamina and endurance and improve overall fitness to navigate smoothly through the diverse terrains.

Altitude Sickness and Acclimatization

You need to be aware of the altitude sickness and acclimatization process to conclude the Annapurna Base Camp Trek successfully.  During this trek, you will be traversing different altitude zones. So, to ensure a smooth and comfortable walk you need to acclimatize properly and trek at a gradual pace.

If you can’t acclimatize to the changing environment of high altitudes, then there is a likelihood of experiencing altitude sickness. So, you need to be aware of your body’s reaction to high altitudes and follow the preventive measures to lessen the risk.

Some of the common signs of altitude sickness include Nausea or vomiting, Appetite Loss, shortness of breath, headache, difficulty sleeping, etc. You should be careful about the signs and descend to the lower zones if symptoms persist.
