Gosaikunda is the (alpine freshwater oligotrophic) frozen lake of Langtang National park. It lies at an elevation of 4,380 m(14,370 ft). UNESCO designated Gosaikunda as a Ramsar Site on the 29 September of 2007. The Ramsar site is an international treaty for the sustainable use and conservation of wetlands. Gosaikunda Lake is also a sacred lake that has enormous religious and cultural significance for all the Nepalese and Hindus all around the world.

You can complete the Gosaikunda  trek 5 days at any time of the year. In terms of trekkers, this region is the most populous during the autumn and spring season. These seasons have moderate sunshine and low precipitation. So these seasons are the most popular seasons to visit Nepal especially for trekking.

There is occasional snowfall during the winter. So the inexperienced trekkers might find it a bit tricky to complete Gosaikunda 5 days trek in the winter season. But if you have some trekking experience and can prepare for the cold, winter offers majestic scenic views.

Summers are a tad wet due to the monsoon, which results in slippery trails. Occasional irregularities might be there as sometimes the trails are too wet to trek in the summers.

Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days Route

There are many routes which you can use to reach Gosaikunda. Depending upon the preference of travelers, they usually start their trek either from Chisapani or from Dhunche. However, the Gosaikunda trek 5 days by Exciting Nepal starts from Dhunche.

You will start your trek after a scenic roadway trip from Kathmandu to Dhunche. This is usually 6-7 hours long. The trekkers will start their thrilling journey from Dhunche and get to Chandan Bari before eventually reaching Gosaikunda. From there, it is more or less downhill to Dhunche.

How Hard is Gosaikunda trek?

With regards to the difficulty, Gosaikunda trek is a moderate trek. Numerous factors like age, physical fitness, weather, season, preparation, experiecne etc. determine the difficulty of the trek.

As the trek is only 5 days long, it is not going to be an exhausting trek. You will be trekking for only 3 days as the rest of the 2 days will be spent on a bus ride. Besides, the altitude of the highest point in the trek is only 4380 meters, there are extremely limited chances of altitude sickness.

Permits for Gosaikunda Trek 5 Days

You will need two permits to do this trek. They are:

  • TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System), which is mandatory for foreign trekkers. The total cost of this permit is Nrs. 2000 per person.
  • Langtang National Park Entry Permit, which is compulsory for all trekkers regardless of their origin. The charge of this permit is Nrs. 3500 ($35) per person.

Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Dunche (2100m), 6-7 hours.

Day 2: Trek to Chandan Bari (3330m)., 5-6 hours walk.

Day 3: Trek to Gosaikunda (4380m) about 7 hour’s walk.

Day 4: Trek down to Dhunche (2100m),

Day 5: Drive to Kathmandu.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Drive to Dhunche.

Altitude: 2000m

Duration: 6 hrs drive from Kathmandu

The first day of your journey starts from Kathmandu as you will drive to Dhunche. You will reach Dhunche after 6 or 7 hours drive. Dhunche is the headquarters of Rasuwa district and the place where this 5 days trek begins. There are various checkpoints along the way where you will have to show your trekking permits.

Day 2: Trek to Chandanbari

Altitude: 3580m

Duration: 4/5 hours trek

From Dhunche, you will begin the 4-5 hour trek today to Chandanbari. along the way, you can find restaurants or cafes to rest and eat. After taking a short rest at Deurali, you will be trekking to Chandanbari. Chandanbari is the name given to a famous monastery in the region known as Singompa. The monastery is a way to realise the wonderful culture and traditions of Rasuwa. After some exploration of this region, you will spend your night at some of the wonderful lodges or teahouses in Chandan Bari.

Day 3: Trek to Gosaikunda.

Altitude: 4380m

Duration: 5/7 hours trek

On the third day, you will start trekking to the Gosaikunda lake. The trek today is a bit challenging as you will have to climb plenty of uphills. You will trek through villages like Cholangpati and Lauribine to Gosaikunda.

After trekking for 5-7 hours, you will reach Gosaikunda Lake and its surrounding lakes. The 108 lakes of this region lie along the foothills of the mountains around this place. From the various wonderful places along the way, you will be able to catch the wonderful views of sunrise and sunset. Other famous lakes in and around Gosaikunda lake are Nagkunda, Bhairav Kunda, Suryakunda.

Day 4: Trek back to Dhunche.

After spending a night in Gosaikunda, you will descend to Chandrawari. Along the trekking route, you will be able to enjoy delightful views of the Pine and Rhododendron forest while having lunch. After lunch, you will get back down to Dhunche, where you will spend your night.

Day 5: Return to Kathmandu.

After spending one more night in Dhunche, you will return back to Kathmandu. As you will take the same road back to Kathmandu, you will enjoy the delightful bus ride along the 6-7 hour drive back to Kathmandu.
