Every year we hear many climbers make their way to summit Mount Everest. It is considered the World’s Highest mountain above sea level standing at a height of 8848 m.
People have many lingering questions relating to the actual age of Mount Everest like How old is Mount Everest? Or What is the actual geological age of Mount Everest?
Technically speaking, there are no exact records of how old it is. But according to the research done by Scientists, it is probably around 50 to 60 million years old.
Everest is a part of the Himalayas and scientists believe that the Himalayas are formed due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. So, the age of Everest is similar to the age of the Himalayas.
However, a few years back it was discovered that around 500 million years ago there was a presence of mountain ranges. Even before the collision where now the Himalayas lie.
So a reasonable explanation was made that maybe 500 million years ago the Indian plate had collided and formed the mountain ranges. Moved back and again after 55 million years collided back.
Thus Mount Everest can even be 500 million years old too. However, Everest was first Submitted by Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay from Nepal in the year 1953. They were the members of the ninth British expedition to Everest.
These two people inspired many other climbers that if you have a strong will you can even summit the world’s highest mountain. Nowadays, many climbers make their way to the summit more than once.
Mount Everest is known as Sagarmatha in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan. This mountain is located inside the Sagarmatha National Park in the district of Solukhumbu. And makes up as the international border between China and Nepal.
It has two base camps: North base camp in Tibet and South Base Camp in Nepal. However, South Base Camp is used to make the climb through the southeast ridge.
Everest region is quite famous for hosting many treks and climbs. Among these activities, Everest Base Camp Trek is the most popular one. The highest point of this trek is Kala Patthar situated at an altitude of 5643 m.
Other than trekking, this region also offers mountain climbing till the summit of Everest. However, the climb is quite thrilling and challenging so not many have been able to reach the summit.
