To make sure you’re well-prepared, it’s a good idea to arrive a day early for the trip. This gives you a chance to rest and get any gear you might need. Also, it’s smart to schedule your international flights with some extra days in Nepal before and after the trek, just in case your flights are delayed because of the weather.
And remember, you can personalize your trip too! You can add on a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu or try out other adventure activities. There are plenty of options to explore before or after the trek.
Flying to Lukla from Manthali Airport
The main reason for the flight Lukla flight rerouting from Manthali Airport is due to the traffic congestion at the airport and the high volume of tourists during the peak months of peak season (i.e., March, April, May, October, and November).
Manthali Aiport, located in Ramechhap, operates especially on this route to minimize traffic congestion during the peak seasons. This airport operates approximately 15 flights on a daily basis to Lukla. The major airlines that operate from this airport on the Kathmandu to Lukla route are Sita Air, Summit Airline, and Tara Air.
Manthali Airport, located in Ramechhap, is approximately 132 km away from the capital city Kathmandu. It will take about 4 to 5 hours to reach Manthali Airport from Kathmandu and catch the flight to Lukla.
There are actually two ways you can take the morning flight from Ramechhap to move along with your itinerary plan for the adventures in the Everest region. You can either wake up at 2:00 A.M. at your hotel in Kathmandu and drive for 4 to 5 hours to catch the morning flight to Lukla from Manthali.
Or, you can leisurely explore the capital and drive to Ramechhap and rest the night there to take the tomorrow morning flight from the airport. That’s why you are recommended to have a few spare days for your trip; this way, you won’t have to rush your itinerary plans and take it easy with your exploration. Keep in mind that accommodations in Manthali hotels offer basic amenities and are limited.
Benefits of Taking Lukla Flight From Manthali Airport
Although the drive to Ramechhap for rerouting of flights during the peak season may seem like an inconvenience, there are also brighter sides to the extra mile of the journey. Besides the bad weather conditions that delay flights, the traffic congestion at the TIA, the only international airport in the country, can affect your itinerary plans.
However, the Manthali Airport in Ramechhap is dedicated for only to Lukla flights, and you can take it easy with the transfer process.
Similarly, Ramechhap is a lot closer to Lukla than Kathmandu, and it takes only about 20 minutes to reach Lukla from Ramechhap instead of 40 minutes on the standard Kathmandu to Luka route.
