Day 1: Drive to Dhampus From Pokhara, Trek to Rest Camp

The journey begins with a drive to Dhampus from Pokhara. The trailhead is just a short ride from Pokhara, making it one of the simplest high altitude treks to access in Nepal.

Dhampus is a classic Gurung village perched on a ridge top about 25 kilometers northwest of Pokhara city. The drive normally takes about 45 minutes to an hour through green cultivated fields, terraced slopes and scenic rural villages.

Dhampus is the gateway to the Mardi Himal trek with sweeping views of the Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South rising high on the skyline. The town is friendly with inhabitants who possess warm smiles. Their heart warming welcome and rich culture instantly sets the tone for the adventure lying ahead.

From Dhampus, the walk starts on well trodden trails that rise gradually through oak, rhododendron and pine forest. The Mardi Himal trek map leads us forward on the trail. You will pass through small villages such as Siddha and Pothana where old stone buildings and terraced fields characterize the rural existence of the Gurung and Magar inhabitants.

These villages offer a chance to meet people of the village, watch them cultivate their land traditionally and observe the unchanged lifestyles. The hike is peaceful and engaging with birdsong and mountain breeze serving as background to the gradual climb.

The hike of the day ends at Rest Camp, which lies at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters above sea level. A restful place with nice views of Mardi Himal and other summits, Rest Camp features several small comfortable teahouses where you can relax, have warm food and gear up for the coming days. A mix of natural beauty, cultural immersion and easy trekking on this initial day is a delightful and easy introduction to the Mardi Himal experience.

Day 2: Trek From Rest Camp to Badal Danda, Hike to Upper Viewpoint and Return to Badal Danda

Today is the second day of our 3 days Mardi Himal trek itinerary. With the Mardi Himal trek 3 days route map in hand, we begin to hit the trail. The trek from Rest Camp to Badal Danda starts as a gentle ascent through thick rhododendron and oak forests.

There are periodic traditional teahouses along the route where you can rest and have light refreshments. The walk up to Badal Danda (3,210 meters) is a 2 to 3 hour moderately challenging ascent.

You will start a scenic uphill hike to the Upper Viewpoint (4,200 meters) from Badal Danda. This section is more boulder and uphill with some of the finest panoramic mountain views on the trek.

You will have breathtaking views of the Mardi Himal and prominent peaks like Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Gangapurna from the Upper Viewpoint. This is the best vantage point for immersing yourself in the majesty of the Himalayas, taking excellent photos and relaxing before heading back.

After spending some time at the Upper Viewpoint, you will return back to Badal Danda for an overnight stay. The descent gives one a chance to admire the trail from another perspective. Comfortable teahouses at Badal Danda provide a warm haven from the day’s efforts where a hot meal can be enjoyed and stories of the day be exchanged with fellow trekkers.

This day blends physical hardship with stunning views and it is one of the Mardi Himal trek’s best moments.

Day 3: Trek to Siding, Drive Back to Pokhara

The final day of trekking begins with an easy walk from Badal Danda to Siding, a small village with paddy fields and Himalayan landscape. It is a picturesque trail and an easy trekking session in comparison with the previous two days.

On the way, you will be able to enjoy scenic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The route goes through picturesque local villages where traditional stone buildings and irrigated agricultural land display the simple rural way of life of the Gurung and Magar people.

There is also the option to take a walk around the village for a while, saying hello to the friendly villagers and taking in the peaceful scenery before getting onto a vehicle for a scenic ride out to Pokhara.

The 1.5 to 2 hour journey winds through idyllic countryside. You will pass across the hillside terracing and villages with the views of snow capped peaks in the distance. And then, once back in the comfort of Pokhara, take time to relax, soak up the scenery and enjoy the triumphant conclusion of the Mardi Himal Trek 3 days.

Accommodation and Food During the Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek features basic lodgings in teahouses en route. Simple rooms with two to three beds are provided that serve to be a comfortable shelter for an exhausted trekker at the end of a day’s walk. The beds usually consist of a thick mattress, an adequate pillow set and a blanket to combine comfort.

It is advisable to bring a sleeping bag, especially in winter treks as there may be no heating facilities. In spite of limited teahouse amenities, it is a pleasant and home-like stay with the friendly hospitality of the local families running them.

The cuisine served on the trek is varied. You can find several local and international food items on the menus. The typical meal in every teahouse is Dal Bhat (lentil soup accompanied by rice). It is a healthy and wholesome fare that provides sustained energy throughout.

Besides, you can enjoy noodles, soups, flatbreads and simple Western fare such as pasta, sandwiches or omelets. Fruits and vegetables will most likely be in short supply due to altitude and accessibility but still, teahouses strive to offer them whenever possible.

Overall, you will have a clean and safe stay and fresh, healthy meals throughout the journey. While accommodation will not be luxurious, scenic mountain views, the warmth of local people and genuine cultural experiences make up for it and provide you with a rewarding trekking adventure.

Best Time to Trek Mardi Himal 3 Days

The best time for the Mardi Himal trek is fall (September to November) with October being the optimum. The climate is stable and pleasant at this period with clear blue sky most of the time. Since the monsoon rains have cleaned all the dust, you can enjoy crystal clear views of mountains like Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal etc. The weather is mild, the trails are vibrant with golden autumn foliage and sunrise/sunset views are at their best.

The second best season is spring (March to May), when the trail bursts into color with blooming rhododendrons and fresh greenery. While the skies may be a bit more hazy than in autumn, the weather is still generally clear and the forests are at their most verdant. It is a perfect time for those who enjoy hiking through lush vegetation and would like to avoid the cold weather of late autumn or early winter.

It is possible to undertake the Mardi Himal Trek during winter (December to February) or early monsoon (June). But the former brings cold and snow higher up, while the latter comes with extreme heat and slippery tracks.

For a 3-day trek, where time is of the essence, the right season is worth choosing to get the best scenery and comfort. Autumn and spring are usually the best seasons for a short, quality trek with great scenery and safe conditions.

Difficulty Level of Mardi Himal Trek 3 Days

The 3 days Mardi Himal Trek is graded as an easy to moderate mountain adventure. However, due to the tight itinerary, it may be a bit challenging for those who are not accustomed to long days of hiking or rapid altitude gain.

There are steep rises and falls on the trek especially in between Forest Camp, High Camp and Upper Viewpoint. This can be tiring when completed within a short time. Trekking to higher elevations of 4,200 meters to Mardi Upper Viewpoint needs endurance as well as regular pacing. Plus, you have to watch out for signs of altitude sickness to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

Since this variation of the trek combines what is typically achieved in 4–5 days into just 3 days, sound physical fitness is essential. You must be prepared for lengthy hiking days, at times 7–9 hours long with little resting time in between. Although the path is well signposted and comparatively safe, the rapid altitude increase requires being mindful of altitude sickness symptoms and acting accordingly.

All of that aside, the trek is not particularly challenging for physically capable beginners or experienced trekkers used to trekking over rugged mountain terrain. Provided with the right attitude, some advance planning and a leisurely, sustained pace, the Mardi Himal Trek 3 days offers a real mountain experience with a good mix of good views and vibrant resident culture.

Preparations for 3 Days Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek 3 days is physically demanding with a tight schedule and massive altitude gain. To prepare, you must be working on cardiovascular endurance and leg and core strength and stamina. Regular hiking, walking uphill and aerobic exercises like running, swimming and cycling several weeks before the trek will physically prepare the body. Since the trek involves long walking days and lots of climbing, it is best to be fit in order to enjoy it without excessive fatigue.

The other way to prepare for the trek is packing light but wisely. Since you will only be trekking for three days, pack only essentials: a good pair of trekking shoes that are well broken in, layering clothes for uncertain and changeable weather, rain gear, trekking aids like headlamps, GPS, documents and a daypack with water, snacks and basic first aid.

The mornings and evenings at the higher elevations can be chilly even in spring or fall, so thermal layers, gloves and a hat are recommended. A trekking pole will also be handy, especially for the downhill walks.

Besides, your permit should be sorted well in advance. It is also wise to bring some cash (Nepali rupees) along with you as there are no ATMs on the trail. Likewise, being well updated with weather forecasts, trail conditions, and altitude precautions will also have you prepared and confident for the trek.

Ready your mind to tolerate weather fluctuations, steep grades and hours of walking by being optimistic and patient throughout the trek. Embrace the unpredictability of mountain trekking as part of the adventure. Remain open-minded and focus on the scenic views and cultural delights waiting for you. A small amount of planning and preparation goes a very long way towards making this short journey easy, safe and enjoyable.

Do You Need a Guide or Porter for the Mardi Himal Trek 3 Days?

While hiring a guide or porter for the Mardi Himal Trek is not mandatory, it would be an enhancement to the experience, especially on a short and fast paced 3 days trek.

A qualified guide ensures you stay on course and also provides you with an insights of the local culture, mountain names and historical myths. They are also trained in high-altitude awareness and emergency protocols, which is especially useful given the steep altitude gain on this trek.

You can hire a porter to carry your heavy backpack and cover the trail with less struggle. This proves to be particularly useful when days are long and the trail includes several downhill and uphill segments. Hiring a porter also assists the local economy by providing employment to the people who are typically from the area.

With that said, solo trekking can be done by those with excellent fitness levels, past hiking experience and familiarity with the mountainous trail. The path to Mardi Himal is well marked and teahouses are sufficient. You can easily find the way and get decent food and shelter.

Frankly, the choice to take on a porter or guide depends on your trekking style, comfort on the trail and need for help on the trail. They both add ease, safety and enrichment to the trek.

Permit Required for the Mardi Himal Trek

For trekking the Mardi Himal trail, only a single official permit is enough. It is the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit. This is mandatory for everyone, regardless of whether you are trekking with a guide or independently.

The ACAP is administered by the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC). It is obligatory as the Mardi Himal trail lies within the boundary of the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal’s largest protected area. The ACAP permit will cost NPR 3,000 per person (USD 22). The fee from the permit is utilized for the protection of the environment and for infrastructural development in local communities.

This permit can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) or Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara. In general, trekking with a registered agency (Exciting Nepal) will help to acquire the permit. We recommend that you print out this permit and carry it with you on the trek, since it will need to be presented at several checkpoints along the trek. You may be turned back or fined for failing to possess it.

Mardi Himal Trek – Nature and Culture

The Mardi Himal Trek is a rich experience of Nepal’s least visited natural environments and culture. The trekking route goes through dense rhododendron and oak forests blanketed with mosses. As you ascend further, the view totally changes from warm, green valleys to rugged, wind swept ridges with expansive vistas of Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal.

Wildlife such as Himalayan monals, langurs and other birds give a touch of wonder and awe to the trek, especially in the preserved Annapurna Conservation Area. In addition to natural scenic beauty, the trek is also rewarding in terms of culture.

The lower villages are inhabited densely by Gurung inhabitants who are famous for their hospitality and distinct culture. You are able to observe and sometimes participate in aspects of village life whether it is sharing a home-cooked dinner, learning about Buddhist customs, observing traditional architecture or celebrating the vibrant festivals. These authentic interactions give a more meaningful glimpse into mountain life beyond the usual tourist trail.

The combination of unspoiled nature and unchanged local culture makes the Mardi Himal Trek very rewarding. Despite the short duration of the trek, it presents the Nepal Himalayan experience in its completeness with serene landscapes, spiritual essence and hospitality of the people. If you are drawn either to the mountains or the people, this trek serves up both in perfect measure.
