- Use local buses or shared transports to and from the trekking trailhead instead of private ones.
- Choose simple local meals rather than expensive international dishes in the tea houses in order to keep food costs under control.
- Do not buy high priced snacks along the way. Bring energy bars, nuts and trail mix to reduce the consumption of expensive foodstuffs during the journey.
- Save on rentals by bringing your own trekking equipment like sleeping bags, walking poles, headlamps etc.
- Double check the necessary permits before starting the journey to avoid paying for extra ones. It is a small but important way to keep costs low.
- Instead of booking individual rooms, opt for dormitory rooms in tea houses.
- To save on bottled water costs, have a refillable water bottle and fill it up where there is safe water. It is cost efficient as well as eco friendly approach.
- If available, plan your hike off season. Avoiding peak tourist times saves money on permits, hotels and eating.
- Being with a small group of trekkers will cost you much less. Sharing transportation and services like porters or guides decreases the total cost per person.
- Make sure to pack everything you will need on the trek like sunscreen, toiletries and first aid kit so that you do not have to buy pricey things along the way.
- Avoid extras such as hot showers or internet access in tea houses. It is better to manage with a quick cold shower or do without the internet for a few days to save some cash.
- Negotiate prices for accommodations or meals, especially in areas that are not heavily crowded.
