Mount Everest

Best Time for Trek

The Everest Base Camp Trek by Road is an alternative experience to the standard EBC Trek. Compared to the standard exploration that relies on Kathmandu to Lukla flight, this by-road experience can be enjoyed even when the weather is slightly less favorable.

As this journey is not fixed flight dependent, you can relish the journey for a more extended period across the year. However, for the best experience, we will still recommend the top seasons like spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November).

Thanks to the comfortable temperatures and weather stability factors, you can make the most out of your Himalayan journey during this period. The springtime brings out the incredible charms of nature.

You will find the whole landscape brimming with life during this nature’s peak season and the colorful rhododendron flowers across the route will make the experience even more exhilarating. Similarly, the autumn season welcomes calmness and stability.

The temperatures in autumn are most ideal for outdoor exploration and the trail is dry and comfortable. Similarly, the autumn season is also a hub for some of the major celebrations in the country.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Kathmandu to Khari Khola Drive

Kathmandu Elevation: 1,400 meters/4,594 feet

Khari Khola Elevation: 2,040 meters/6,693 feet

Drive Distance: approximately 250 kilometers

Drive Duration: 9-10 hours

We will start our exhilarating Everest Base Camp trek by road from Kathmandu with a scenic drive to Khari Khola. Your day starts with a filling breakfast in the morning followed by preparations for this fantastic overland trip.

We will depart Kathmandu early in the morning (around 7:00 AM). The first stretch of the drive takes you to Dhulikhel which is about 30 km east of Kathmandu. This part of the trip takes roughly 1 hour.

From Dhulikhel, you will head further east to Bardibas. Scenic rural landscapes with rice terraces and small villages will pass by your eyes as you drive from hilly areas down to the Terai plains.

The next stretch would fall from Bardibas to Jiri, a drive of around 70 km. Driving would take approximately 2.5 hours. As we are entering the Solu Khumbu region, most of the drive is uphill while it transforms into dense forests and steep hills. In previous times, Jiri was the starting point for a trek to Everest before the opening of the airport at Lukla.

We will continue our journey to Khari Khola which is 50 km away and takes about 3 hours to drive. The road is more rugged and unpaved with winding paths through forests and villages. The views of snow capped peaks in the distance are hypnotic.

Khari Khola is at the edge of the Solu Khumbu region and is a gateway for trekkers on their way to Everest Base Camp. It is a small village primarily inhabited by Sherpa with a rich Tibetan Buddhist influence. Surrounded by dense rhododendrons and pine forests, the village offers magnificent views of the Himalayas.

Day 02: Khari Khola to Surke Drive

Surke Elevation: 2,290 meters/7,513 feet

Drive Distance: 10 kilometers

Drive Duration: 2 hours

The drive from Khari Khola to Surke is relatively short but scenic. You will begin your day after breakfast. A 4WD or jeep is typically used for this route as the road can be rough, narrow and unpaved.

The drive from Khari Khola to Surke goes deeper into the Solu Khumbu region. This part of the journey offers stunning views of the Dudh Koshi River and its tributaries. You will see the surrounding hillsides dotted with small Sherpa villages, terraced fields of maize and paddy and dense forests of pine and rhododendron as you go higher.

Along the way you will see several beautiful waterfalls cascading down the hillsides, providing scenic photo opportunities. You will drive past the traditional stone houses of Sherpa with Tibetan Buddhism influences. You might also spot fluttering flags and small chortens beside the road.

Eventually, we will arrive at Surke, a small village with a traditional Sherpa culture that serves as a starting point for trekkers towards Everest Base Camp. It lies on the bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Surke remains pretty silent and is perfect for those trekkers who are not in the mood for chaos.

In the village, you will get to experience the warmth of Sherpa hospitality and see their daily lives. The views of Numbur Himal and Gaurishankar are awesome from here. The village is enveloped by lush greenery woods of pine and rhododendrons, making this area a wonderful place to visit.

The drive then continues through the Dolkha District, descending towards Kathmandu Valley. Notable places like Charikot, Dhulikhel and Banepa and majestic views of Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal are the attractions of this part of the drive.
