Difficulty Level of Langtang Circuit Trek

Difficulty Level of Langtang Circuit Trek

Even among the mainstream trekking adventures, the Langtang region is considered one of relatively easier exploration even in the moderate category. Even if you are a complete beginner who doesn’t have much experience in high-altitude trekking, you will still be able to take part in this journey with a good amount of preparation. There aren’t any major challenging sections in this circuit trek, nor are there parts where you will need to use technical tools.

So, in overall, it is a moderate-level journey that guarantees an unforgettable Himalayan exploration. Still, there are several factors that you have to consider while doing this trek. Regardless of its relatively easier nature, even in the moderately difficult category, this is still a two-week-long high-altitude endeavor. So, you need to be especially careful about the altitude gain; you will begin your trek from Syabru Bensi (1,503 meters) and reach the highest point at Kyanjin Ri (4,773 meters). The overall altitude gain in this Himalayan trek is approximately around 3,270 meters (10,728 feet).

Similarly, the total trekking distance of this third mainstream exploration is nearly about 180 km (111 miles). So, you will need to walk about 5 to 6 hours on average during each trekking day. Similarly, the remoteness of the Himalayas, rugged trekking route, unpredictable high-altitude weather, etc, are some other aspects that you should prepare for.

How Should You Prepare?

How Should You Prepare Langtang Circuit Trek

After discussing the difficulty level, you might be slightly worried about the factors that you might consider challenging. However, let me make you clear: you will be able to easily overcome these challenges with a good amount of preparation. To avoid the weather challenges and challenging routes, you should consider doing the trek during the high seasons.

As for the other parts, like overcoming the altitude gain and long hours of trekking, physical preparation is the only solution, and let me tell you this: ‘there are no shortcuts.’ We generally recommend trekkers to prepare for at least 2 to 3 weeks so their bodies can get used to the physical activities. If you train or workoun, then you can set the preparation period as per your preference.

During your preparation, you should focus on developing your strength and endurance level (i.e., push up, pull up, deadlift, bench press, dip, leg press, and overall full-body workout). Then, for the next part, you need to work on your stamina level and try to extend your reserve. Stamina training will not only make the long hours of walking more easy, but it will also help your body to quickly adapt to new altitudes.

Note: To overcome the remoteness and lack of proper infrastructural development on the mountain, you also could mentally prepare (i.e., being flexible, learning to leave your comfort zone, staying positive, etc).

What to Expect on Langtang Circuit Trek?

What to Expect on Langtang Circuit Trek?

Like any other Himalayan exploration in the country, your Langtang Circuit Trek also follows a standard trekking map. The total trekking distance of the day, short breaks, highlights exploration, breakfast, lunch, and dinner destinations are pre-determined. Each day of your trek, after you move along the trekking route, Syabru Bensi will provide you the opportunity to explore the unique aspects of each elevation point as you head toward the heart of the mountain.

On a typical day, you enjoy your hot breakfast from around 7 AM to 8 AM, after which you make your preparations to set out on the route. Moving along the pre-determined route, you will continue exploring the natural and cultural beauty of the Himalayan region. After trekking for about 4 hours, you then reach your lunch stop. You will continue following the remaining part of this day’s trek, which is generally about 2 to 3 hours (the trekking part after lunch is shorter).

If you have daylight, you can do sightseeing around after reaching your rest destination. Dinner will be served around 6 PM to 7 PM, and enjoy meals with your companions in the lively dining hall at the teahouses. After dinner, your guide will brief you about the upcoming journey tomorrow, and you will make the preparations accordingly.

Packing List

If you are setting out on the trails of the Langtang Circuit Trek during the peak seasons like autumn and spring, you don’t need to carry heavy gears or layers as the temperatures are pleasant and trail conditions are stable. However, if you are doing this trek during the monsoon season (June to August), you will have to pack the waterproof layers and gear to comfortably move along the slippery train. Similarly, footwear with good traction is a mandatory requirement to explore the Himalayan terrains during this rainy season.

Similarly, as for the winter (December to February), the coldest month in the Himalayas, you will need to pack the appropriate warm clothes and appropriate gear to keep yourself warm. From my personal experience, I have created this standard packing checklist that you can use as a reference to make an efficient packing for the trek.

Packing List for Langtang Trek

  • Sun-block hat, neck scarf (don’t underestimate the high altitude heat)
  • Comfortable t-shirt (pack a moisture-wicking base layer as well)
  • Warm mid-layers (thermal, vest or sweater)
  • Breathable jacket
  • Waterproof/windproof layers
  • Flexible trousers and hiking pants
  • Insulated trousers for the alpine region
  • Down jacket
  • Sleeping bag (preferably four seasonal)
  • Hiking pole
  • Sleeping bag
  • Headlamp or torch (bring extra batteries)
  • Power bank
  • Water bottle and thermos flask
  • Foot gaiter
  • Rainproof cover for luggage and yourself
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Snacks, energy bars, and electrolytes
  • First aid kit

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is mandatory for any kind of trekking adventure in Nepal. Getting travel insurance is also beneficial in the long run as you don’t have to handle all the financial burden all by yourself in case of unfavorable circumstances. Trekking requires you to put in a lot of physical effort and you will have to traverse across the rugged and challenging landscapes of the Himalayas. Thus, it also puts you at risk of physical injuries and other health-related issues.

So, adhering to ‘better to be safe and prepared than sorry’ policy, getting travel insurance will allow you to do your trek more freely as you have good assurance for unforeseen circumstances. The travel insurance also doesn’t cost a lot; you wil be able to get the general packages with upto 3,000 meters coverage at around just US$ 30 to US$ 50.

In the case of the recommended travel insurance plans that have coverage upto 6,000 meters, you can get such packages at around US$ 100 to US$ 150. However, the packages with helicopter rescue coverage are more expensive than the regular packages, which can cost over US$ 1,000.
