Day 1: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola
Machha Khola: 850 m
Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours
Distance: 160 km
Your adventure starts with an early morning road journey between Kathmandu to Machha Khola. Once you leave the city, you hit the Prithvi Highway where you will see rolling hills, rivers, terraced fields and highway settlements.
You will pass several towns like Naubise, Malekhu, and Dhading Besi. Each spot lets you get glimpses of everyday Nepali life. You will also have a chance to take a lunch and tea/coffee break along the road which is essential for relaxing and refueling before continuing the road journey.
Progressing further, you will reach spots like Arughat and Soti Khola. Once you get closer to the destination, the winding roads get bumpier, which lets you feel the thrill.
When evening rolls around, you will finally reach Machha Khola and check in to your teahouse and get some rest.
Machha Khola is a tiny riverside village in Gorkha District. It is a popular village of the Manaslu region which is chosen by most of the trekkers as the first resting point for the night before beginning the journey on foot to the mountains.
Day 2: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat
Jagat: 1,300 m
Time Duration: 6 to 7 hrs
Distance: 22 km
After having a warm breakfast from your teahouse in Machha Khola, you will hit the trail. The early walk is on a pretty easy path with some flat parts mixed with gradual uphill stretches.
After about 55 minutes, you will reach the village of Khorla Besi. Here, you can take short break and relax for a while. Leaving Khorla Besi behind, the path winds its way toward Tatopani, which is known for its natural hot springs. It is a famous spot on the Manaslu Circuit where trekkers generally take a rest, dip their toes in the warm water, snap a few pics and continue the journey.
Soon, you will move along the tranquil path to reach Thulo Dhunga. It takes roughly an hour to get there. Trekkers stop here to have lunch. You may enjoy your lunch time at this serene place while enjoying the enchanting scenery.
After lunch, you will make your way toward Yaru Bagar. You will also be passing through a section of a landslide prone area, which requires careful footing. As the journey progresses you will cross the exhilarating bridge. This will be a truly thrilling experience for you.
Continuing further while witnessing the incredible scenery of the surrounding landscape, you will finally reach Jagat. You will stay at the best teahouses in Jagat for the night.
Day 3: Trek from Jagat to Deng
Deng: 1,860 m
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hrs
Trek Distance: 19 km
Today you will trek to Deng. After breakfast in Jagat, you will begin your scenic navigation. Along the way, you can see several suspension bridges, traditional villages, chortens and colorful prayer flags, which make your adventure truly spiritually enriching.
Initially, you will walk alongside the Budhi Gandaki River towards Salleri. On the route, you will see a stunning waterfall and feel the refreshing ambiance.
Afterwards, you will head towards Philim which is one of the popular stops on the Manaslu trail. You will walk for an hour, cross a suspension bridge, and reach this lively village, which is also a checkpoint of the Manaslu Conservation Area.
In Philim, you can see schools, monasteries, shops and hospitals. From here, you will enjoy a short stroll of 40 to 50 minutes to reach Chisapani. Here, you will stop for lunch.
Afterwards, you will continue moving toward Deng. This section includes several uphill hikes through forested areas and mountain trails. Moving further, you will pass through settlements such as Nyak Phedi and Pewa.
The route is also used by travelers heading towards the remote Tsum Valley. As you progress, you can also spot a trail that leads towards the Tsum Valley which is another fascinating trekking region of Nepal. After walking for about 4 hours from Chisapani, you will finally reach Deng, your stop for the night.
Day 4: Trek from Deng to Namrung
Namrung: 2,660 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Trek Distance: 14 km
You will trek to Namrung Village today. After a morning breakfast at the teahouse in Deng, you will be trekking through forests, traditional villages and mountains.
Your journey starts with a steady climb through scenic terrain. As you move higher you will see Tibetan Buddhist culture more. Soon, you will arrive at Bihi Phedi where you can witness beautiful streams and monasteries.
Leaving Bihi Phedi, you will follow a path with dense forests which lets you feel the peacefulness of nature. Soon, you will reach Ghap. It is a famous lunch spot for trekkers.
You may enjoy your lunch here and then continue the trek further along the gentle path of Budhi Gandaki River. You will navigate lush forests, see beautiful waterfalls and walk beside mani walls. Moving further through the scenic paths, you will finally reach Namrung.
Namrung is a picturesque mountain village. By staying here, you can get a glimpse of local life and also the Tibetan influenced culture. Likewise, in Namrung, you may also explore monasteries and walk around traditional settlements to experience daily life.
Day 5: Trek to Lho
Lho: 3,180 m
Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hrs
Trek Distance: 9 km
Day 5 takes you to the charming village of Lho. You will enjoy the morning breakfast in Namrung and begin your adventure on foot. The trail winds down through quiet forest paths and as you progress it gradually ascends offering glimpses of snowy peaks.
The scenery keeps changing as you climb higher. The thick forests of rhododendron and pine replace the lower valley vegetation, which is a fascinating change.
Proceeding along the scenic trail you will reach Lihi village. It is a peaceful place with beautiful stone houses. It is a great spot to take a break. Here, you may interact with friendly locals while also admiring stunning views of Manaslu range.
From here, you will follow the serene pathway that leads toward Sho village. This stretch rewards you with clear views of Manaslu. After Sho, the path winds through open alpine areas and hillside paths. You will move ahead through scenic hillside paths and finally reach Lho Village.
Lho is a peaceful mountain village. A key highlight of Lho Village is the famous Ribung Monastery. It is located on hill top abiove the village. To experience its spiritual atmosphere, you can visit the monastery and spend some quiet moments there. You may also choose to just rest at your teahouse and stroll around the village enjoying the calm surroundings.
Day 6: Trek from Lho to Samagaun
Samagaun: 3,520 m
Trek Duration: 6 hrs
Trek Distance: 17 km
Today’s walk from Lho to Sama Gaun is among the most scenic parts of the trek. After breakfast, you bid the village farewell and start following a path that slowly takes you up the valley. As you go higher, the wider views of the snowy peaks can be seen all around.
You will navigate the pine and juniper forests until you reach the high Himalayan zone. Glimpses of Manaslu and nearby peaks can be seen throughout the journey. You will then continue along the mountain trail and navigate a suspension bridge.
Afterwards, you will walk past small settlements and terrace farms where you can see the traditional way of living of locals. Walking further, you will finally reach Shyala.
At Shyala you can take a short rest and enjoy amazing views of Manaslu and Himalchuli. From here, the trail descends leading towards the river. You will descend and then head uphill again to reach Sama Gaun.
Day 7: Acclimatization Day at Samagaun
In Samagaun, trekkers typically spend a rest day to get used to the higher altitude. This day can minimize the risk of altitude sickness too. So, we advise all trekkers to follow the acclimatization schedule.
On this day, some trekkers choose a tough hike to Manaslu Base Camp. You can reach the base camp of Manaslu in 6 to 7 hours. It is situated at 4,800 m. The hike can be quite tough but the reward is immense.
You will be rewarded with incredible close ups views of Mount Manaslu and nearby snow clad peaks. In the climbing season, you may also catch a glimpse of climbers setting up tents or preparing for the ascent.
Hiking to Pungyen Gompa is another great option. It takes around 4 to 5 hours to get to the gompa from Samagaun. It is situated at 4,000 meters. From here, you will enjoy enchanting views of Mount Manaslu and nearby mountains. The monastery offers a peaceful atmosphere. So, it is ideal for meditation.
Another choice is hiking to Birendra Lake. It is stunning glacial lake of the Manaslu Region. You will hike for about one hour along a gentle uphill trail from Samagaon to reach this peaceful spot which is surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery. It is situated at 3,644 m.
The path is gentle, which is perfect for trekkers looking for an alternative to a tough hike to Manaslu Base Camp. This hike takes place mostly uphill but is manageable with the right preparation. Once you reach the lakeside, you can sit at the tranquil spot, click pictures and enjoy the scenic surroundings.
Day 8: Trek from Samagaon to Samdo
Samdo: 3,875 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hrs
Trek Distance: 8 km
Early in the morning, you leave Sama Gaun and start trekking through well marked mountain trail. Soon, you will walk through alpine forest, enjoying great views of the surrounding peaks. As you go higher, the landscape gradually becomes more barren.
This route is a combination of easy ups and downs. The trail is mostly flat with a slight incline in the final section. Along the route, you will walk past small huts and mani walls. Furthermore, beautiful Yak pastures can also be seen on the route which can be a truly fascinating sight to behold.
In addition, the stunning views of snowy peaks make the navigation even more intriguing.
Continuing ahead through scenic paths, you will come across a thrilling suspension bridge. After crossing it, you will move ahead through the rugged path, enjoying the scenic vistas and finally make it to Samdo village.
Day 9: Trek from Samdo to Dharamsala
Dharmashala: 4,450 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hrs
Trek Distance: 9 km
You will begin your journey early from Samdo today. Leaving the village behind, the trail gradually leads into open landscapes which feels remote and untouched. On the way, you can see impressive views of the snow clad mountains and high altitude terrain.
The route follows rocky paths. It then takes you through the area of open yak grazing pastures and wide alpine meadows. Moving ahead, you will reach Larkya Bazaar. It is a trading point that once linked Nepal and Tibet.
Ascending further, the surroundings become more rugged. However, the scenery becomes more striking as glaciers and surrounding peaks look ethereal from this altitude. The path gradually leads you toward Dharmasala also known as High Camp located at about 4,480 meters.
Before crossing of Larkya La Pass, you will stay at Dharmasala. It is a quiet high-altitude stop that is surrounded by snowy peaks. The atmosphere here is raw and the view of Manaslu from Dharamsala is truly mesmerizing.
You will stay in Dharmasala in simple accommodation to rest before demanding pass crossing the next day.
Day 10: Trek from Dharamsala to Bimthang via Larkya La Pass
Trek Duration: 8 to 9 hrs
Distance: 23 km
Bimthang: 3,720 m
Larkya La Pass: 5,106 m
Today you will trek from Dharmasala to Bimthang crossing the Larkya La Pass. The day starts early with a steady climb over rocky trails and moraines. Gradually you will advance to higher elevations.
The ascent is indeed tough. However, the stunning views will help you stay motivated. The beautiful views of the Himalayas including the enchanting Mount Manaslu can be seen clearly as you ascend.
Advancing further, you will reach the top of the scenic Larkya La Pass. Reaching the summit feels amazing as you will be surrounded by breathtaking views of Himlung, Kang Guru, Manaslu and many other peaks. The views are worth every effort. You may celebrate this achievement by taking pictures and enjoying incredible vistas.
Afterwards, you will descend from the Larkya La pass. This part is also challenging. It is also tough on the knees. However, the views will keep you captivated. Continuing the descent along the rocky trail, you pass through serene alpine meadows and lush forested areas gradually making your way down to beautiful valley of Bimthang.
At Bimthang you can see amazing mountain views all around. You can check in to your teahouse and rest comfortably after long day on the route.
Day 11: Trek from Bimthang to Dharapani
Dharapani: 1,860 m
Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hrs
Distance: 24 km
Your destination for today is Dharapani. Leaving Bimthang, you will start the journey walking downhill. On the way, you will get treated to incredible views of Manaslu and other nearby peaks.
Descending further, you will enter serene rhododendron forests. You will enjoy the navigation immersing yourself in the peacefulness of nature. You will then pass through small settlements like Karche and Gho.
Further ahead, you will cross the Dudh River and navigate a pine forested area. The glimpses of snow capped peaks and the valley below make every step of the journey more exciting.
The trail then gently rises up to Tilije where stone built houses and traditional village life let you experience the local culture. From Tilije, you head down toward Dharapani, wandering through terraced farms and small villages.
The path then follows the Marsyangdi River. You can walk along the river enjoying the fresh and refreshing atmosphere. As you approach Dharapani, you will walk through the forests and along the cultivated land.
Upon reaching Dharapani, you will see beautiful traditional villages. You may then rest your bags at your accommodation and enjoy delicious and warm meal prepared by the owner.
This route from Bimthang to Dharapani rewards you with stunning views, offering a beautiful mix of landscapes, traditional villages and gentle ascents and descents. Thus, it stands out as one of the most memorable parts of the adventure.
Day 12: Dharapani to Chame
Chame: 2,650 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Distance: 15.5 km
You will start your trekking adventure in the morning. After breakfast, you will make your way towards Chame.
On the route, you will pass the picturesque forests, traditional villages and cultivated fields. Soon, you will reach Bagarchhap where you can see local lifestyle and get to experience the distinct culture of the region.
Then, following the scenic trail, you will reach Danakyu. Afterwards, you will take a uphill path that takes you to Timang which is widely recognized as one of the most scenic places to enjoy panoramic views of the mountains.
From here, you will walk through scenic trail and cross a suspension bridge before reaching Chame, your stop for the night.
Day 13: Trek from Chame to Pisang
Pisang: 3,330 m
Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs
Trek Distance: 15 km
After leaving Chame you will follow a beautiful trail through Marsyangdi Valley. On the way, you will come across many prayer wheels and mani walls. This lets you experience the rich cultural heritage of Buddhism in this area.
The trek on this section is very enjoyable because of magnificent mountain views. You will walk along the serene path and cross a suspension bridge over the flowing river. Then, you navigate the wide open terrain to get to Teleku.
After traversing the path of serene fir forests, you will reach Bharthang. Many trekkers stop here for some time out to rest. So, you may just take a short break here. Following your break, you start to walk further uphill and reach Dhukur Pokhari. Here, you can enjoy incredible views of the Annapurna range.
Afterwards, the adventure continues through beautiful landscapes. You will cross suspension bridges, navigate open grassy areas and follow uphill paths and eventually reach Pisang. It is a peaceful and welcoming village along the route.
Day 14: Trek from Pisang to Manang
Manang: 3,519 m
Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hrs
Trek Distance: 18 km
Today you will trek to picturesque town of Manang. You will leave Pisang and follow the scenic and gentle route along the valley. As you move ahead, the impressive views of mountains can be seen. You can also see beautiful village settlements that look amazing with the backdrop of snowy mountains.
Soon, you will get to see chortens, mani walls, and prayer flags, which let you see the spiritual side of the region. The trail then requires you to climb steeply towards Ghyaru while treating you to stunning views all the way through. Here, you can see some old stone houses and prayer flags fluttering, rewarding you with glimpses of the local life in the Himalayan region.
Next, you will be walking through barren terrain, making your way towards Ngawal. The landscape becomes increasingly barren, presenting showing different side of the high Himalayas. After a while, you will follow a downhill path and enter the greener section before reaching Mungji, where the trekkers usually take a short break.
From here, you will walk through the open fields while enjoying a serene atmosphere until you reach Bragha. Here, you can see beautiful houses and temples. From here, it only takes a half-hour or so to reach Manang.
At Manang, you will come across numerous prayer wheels, mani walls and stupas. This is a place where trekkers stay the next day too for acclimatization.
Day 15: Acclimatization and Exploration in Manang
Day 15 is your acclimatization day. You may choose short or longer hikes depending on your preference.
You can hike to Gangapurna Lake. The trail is relatively easy and gradually takes you to beautiful turquoise lake formed by the glacier. The scenery includes amazing views of the surrounding Gangapurna Glacier.
Another good option is Chongkor Viewpoint. This involves a continuous uphill walk over the alpine desert area which will reward you with an opportunity to enjoy magnificent vistas of Marsyangdi Valley and its surrounding peaks.
If you are interested in something cultural and short, you may opt for visiting Bhojo Gompa. You can also hike to Khangsar Village. If you are looking for a more adventurous hike, then you can hike to Praken Gompa or the Milarepa Cave, where you get to experience a blend of spirituality as well as amazing mountain views.
Another scenic spot is Ice Lake. It is situated at 4,600 m. Although it is a long uphill trek the views of the mountains from this point are absolutely mesmerizing.
The hikes on this day will help you with acclimatization giving you a chance to explore nature and culture in Manang. After completing your hike, you will go back to your teahouse and rest overnight to be well prepared for the following day.
Day 16: Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka
Yak Kharka: 4,200 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Trek Distance: 10 km
After departing Manang, you will follow the path that gradually rises above the village settlements. At higher altitudes, you get to see panoramic scenery of the valley, the river flowing and lake glistening in the distance. Moving ahead you will pass by serene slopes where yaks graze peacefully.
The navigation continues until you reach Ghunsang. Here, you can take a break at one of the cafes while admiring the surrounding mountains.Then, you will gradually walk uphill enjoying enchanting views of distant peaks covered with snow.
Then, the path slowly climbs, which offers stunning views of distant snow covered peaks. After passing Ghunsang, the path becomes relatively gentle. There are a few small ups and downs, but the path leading towards Yak Kharka is relatively easy to navigate. The trail can be narrow in some sections. So, caution is required while traversing.
You will be able to enjoy a vast open landscape while traversing this route. In addition, there are a few suspension bridges along the way. Crossing these bridges is truly an exciting experience. This section is very rewarding because mountains can be seen from every direction.
Moving ahead along the scenic path, you will eventually make it to Yak Kharka. Your stop for the night is Yak Kharka.
Day 17: Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi
Thorong Phedi: 4,525 m
Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hrs
Distance: 6 km
Leaving Yak Kharka, you will traverse a peaceful route that leads to Ledar. You can reach here in about 20 to 30 minutes. You will move along the scenic path and then cross a long suspension bridge before you make it to Ledar.
Past Ledar, the path continues beside the river, offering incredible scenery of the mountains. Moving further along the trail, you will cross another suspension bridge. Afterwards, you will continue the ascent to the upper side of a mountain. This climb may be strenuous because of the high elevation.
As you progress, you will reach the landslide prone area. The guides will keep track of the conditions and can suggest the safest time to cross the sections. It is important to move cautiously through this area before you head further up the valley.
Moving out from such section, you will continue the navigation through the scenic paths and finally reach Thorong Phedi. After getting there, you may check into your teahouse and get some rest. After resting for some time, a little walk to get familiar with the surroundings can be a great way to help your body get used to the higher altitude.
Day 18: Trek to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass
Thorong La Pass: 5,416 m
Muktinath: 3,800 m
Trek Duration: 8 to 9 hrs
Trek Distance: 15 km
Today is another rewarding day of this trekking adventure. This day, you will cross Thorong La Pass. You will leave Thorong Phedi before sunrise and walk uphill.
You will follow zigzag path and make your way through rocky slopes while enjoying the tranquility of mountain environment. Walking for about 1.5 hours, you will reach High Camp. Here, you may rest for a while.
Following a brief rest you will resume your ascent to Thorong La Pass. You will walk along the narrow yet scenic trails while admiring the incredible views and finally make it to the top of this exhilarating pass.
At the top, you can snap pictures and take your time to appreciate the panoramic scenery. Afterwards, you will trek downhill to reach Muktinath. The descent from the Thorong La pass is quite long.
Also, the path keeps changing between mud and loose stones. In some sections, surface can be slippery so make sure to walk carefully. After a long descent, you will finally see a small guesthouse where you can take a short break. From here, you will continue the journey following the path that directly leads toward Muktinath.
Muktinath is an important place for pilgrimages among the Hindus and Buddhists. On this route, you will see stalls with flower garlands, mules and horses used by people to move to the temple and back from there. This Himalayan town is vibrant with its roads lined up with cafes, hotels and small stores. You may settle in the hotel for a much needed rest after your long hike.
Day 19: Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara
On Day 19, you will leave Muktinath and drive to Pokhara. The road journey descends through the stunning Kali Gandaki Valley rewarding you with stunning views of deep gorges and rocky cliffs.
Along the way, you will pass through places like Jomsom, Marpha and Tatopani. Each spot presents different scenery. You will get to see varied scenery as you leave the mountain area behind and enter the lower hills. Soon afterwards, you will reach Beni and from here the road is mostly smooth. So, you can reach Pokhara comfortably.
Once at Pokhara, you may explore the vibrant streets, cafes or just sit around the tranquil lakeside area and reflect on your trekking adventure.

Accommodation During the Trek

Annapurna Circuit
Teahouses in the Annapurna region of Nepal have a well-developed teahouse trekking system. You can find good accommodation facilities in almost all villages along the trails. Teahouses of Annapurna Circuit are mostly family-owned.
At most of the stops, you will find twin sharing rooms that offer good sleeping arrangements such as mattresses, beds, pillows and blankets. At low altitudes, accommodation is usually more comfortable with some teahouses even offering attached bathrooms.
Higher up in the mountains, lodging facilties are relatively basic but owners will ensure you get a comfortable bed and warm blankets for resting after a long day on the trail.
Manaslu Circuit
During the Manaslu Circuit trek, you will stay at the basic family owned lodges or teahouses. The teahouses are simpler compared to those of the Annapurna Circuit, but it provides you a chance to experience authentic mountain living and exceptional hospitality.
You will get a simple room with two beds. Bathrooms are mostly shared especially as you move to higher zones. The beds are simple but comfortable. You will also get warm blankets. There is a common dining hall that is heated. Here trekkers gather after a long hike and enjoy their warm meals.

Annapurna Circuit
Meals on the Annapurna Circuit route are quite diverse. Tea-houses serve both local and simple Western cuisine. The most common food item is dal bhat. It is very filling and energizing. Food items include noodles, Thukpa, Momo, fried rice, pasta, soup, pancakes, eggs, Tibetan bread, chapatis, porridge, Toast, vegetable soup, spring roll, fried rice and potatoes.
Some teahouses also serve popular Western dishes like pizza, sandwiches and spaghetti.
At higher sections, the menu becomes simpler. However, warm and simple dishes are always available.
Manaslu Circuit
The food in the Manaslu Circuit Trek is much simpler than that of Annapurna because it is in a more remote area and relatively less developed. The majority of the teahouses provide basic Nepalese cuisine, with dal bhat being the main dish everywhere.
It is fresh and simple and will provide you with sufficient energy for your day trekking through the mountains. Though the menu is simple compared to the Annapurna Circuit, teahouses at popular villages still serve dishes like Tibetan bread, chapatis, plain omelets, porridge, oatmeal porridge, fresh vegetable soup, pancakes, macaroni, fried noodles, noodle soup and fried rice.
Options can be limited at higher areas but warm traditional dishes are prepared by the owners so that trekkers still get filling and comforting meals to maintain their energy during the journey.
Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Trek Difficulty
The Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Trek is a strenuous journey that requires good fitness and determination. It takes you through the rugged mountain area and you will have to cover long distances across tough terrain that includes steep climbs along rocky pathways. Is Safe Drinking Water Available During the Manaslu and Annapurna Trek?
Safe drinking water is available. However, you must follow some measures. Firstly, you shouldn't drink water from natural sources without purification.
In both Manaslu and Annapurna regions, you can get boiled water at an extra cost. So, you may carry a reusable water bottle and fill the boiled water at teahouses. This is the best option.
In case you want to use water from natural sources, then you must purify it using the purification tablets or UV filters.

Where Are Rest and Acclimatization Days Usually Planned on this Trek?
The acclimatization days in the Manaslu region are generally scheduled at Samagaun. Some itineraries also add one day for acclimatization at Samdo.
In the Annapurna Circuit trek, the popular acclimatization stop is Manang. However, if trekkers choose to stay at Yak Kharka and they reach here early, then they hike to Ledar. Afterwards. they come back to Yak Kharka to stay overnight. This can help them to adapt.
Likewise, some also stay at Thorong Phedi and hike to high camp and return to Thorong Phedi again for an overnight stay. This strategy can help them with acclimatization.
