Best Time for Climbing Island Peak

Detailed Itinerary
Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and Trek to Phakding
Lukla Elevation: 2,860 m / 9,383 ft

Trek Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Flight Duration: 35 to 40 minutes
On the first day of our trip, we will receive you from the hotel and take you to the domestic departure point of the airport in Kathmandu. You will board a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. This 35 to 40 minute fight is thrilling and scenic. You can witness beautiful views of hills, terraced fields, village settlements and snowy peaks during this scenic flight.
After you arrive in Lukla you can take the time to feel the beautiful high altitude surroundings. Soon afterward, you will begin the trek heading towards picturesque Phakding Village. You will pass through rhododendron forests, suspension bridges and many small villages. As you arrive at Phakding you will witness a beautiful view of Kusum Kanguru. You can then check in at your teahouse and rest comfortably.
Day 02: Trek from Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Phakding Elevation: 2,610 m / 8,562 ft
Namche Bazaar Elevation: 3,440 m / 11,286 ft
Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours
Your destination for this day is Namche Bazaar. You will walk along the Dudh Koshi River banks and also cross suspension bridges over this river. The beautiful colorful prayer flags fluttering in the air can be seen throughout the way.
The stunning views of Thamserku can be seen on this day. You will continue the trek and pass through beautiful small villages and then arrive at the Sagarmatha National Park entrance gate. Here, you need to get your permits checked. Soon afterward, you will continue the trek and hike up through the pine forests. Then, after a gradual descent you will arrive in Namche Bazaar.
Namche Bazaar is the most popular tourist hub of the Khumbu Region. You can get a beautiful view of Everest from this town. You will stay in one of the finest tea houses overnight.
Day 03: Acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar
On Day 3 you will have an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar to adapt to the high altitudes. You can explore the nearby scenic spots on your acclimatization day. Many trekkers tour the vibrant market and visit Syanboche to witness beautiful views of Everest, Thamserku and Ama Dablam. Similarly, you can also visit Hotel Everest View to witness the grandeur of the snowy peaks.
In addition, you may visit historical and cultural sites of this charming town to get insights into the culture and traditions of people living in mountain villages. After exploring this beautiful town you may head back to your teahouse for overnight stay.
Day 04: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
Namche Bazaar Elevation: 3,440 m / 11,286 ft
Tengboche Elevation: 3,867 m / 12,687 ft
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
On the 4th day of the journey you will make your way towards Tengboche village. The trek to Tegnboche starts in the morning after a delicious breakfast at Namche Bazaar. You will cross the serene Dudh Koshi Khola and gradually ascend through pine and rhododendron trees.
Along the way, you will be treated to the mesmerizing sights of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Thamserku and Nuptse. After arriving at the Tengboche village, you can visit Tengboche Monastery, where you can witness Buddhist monks chanting and praying. In addition, you can witness the mesmerizing sights of Mount Everest and Ama Dablam from the monastery. You will stay at one of the teahouses for the night.
Day 05: Trek from Tengboche to Pheriche
Tengboche Elevation: 3,867 m / 12,687 ft
Pheriche Elevation: 4,371 m / 14,340 ft
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
On this day, your destination is Pheriche. You will begin the trek from Tengboche to Pheriche, heading downhill. You will trek through the serene rhododendron forests and arrive in Imja Khola. After you cross the bridge, you will hike uphill again. The enchanting view of Ama Dablam can be seen during this day. After ascending gradually while enjoying the stunning views of the surroundings for a while, you will arrive at the beautiful Pangboche Village.
You can take a short break in Pangboche and explore the village. Afterward, you will continue the trek and come across beautiful land used for yak grazing. You will cross the exciting suspension bridge surrounded by stunning views. You will continue the trek and drop down to cross the serene Lobuche Khola. Then, after covering a short distance, you will arrive in Pheriche.
Day 06: Trek from Pheriche to Lobuche
Pheriche Elevation: 4,371 m / 14,340 ft
Lobuche Elevation: 4,940 m / 16,207 ft
Trek Duration: 5 to 6 hours
On 6th day you will trek to Lobuche from Pheriche. You will begin the journey to the beautiful Lobuche after having a wholesome breakfast at Pheriche. You will then trek at a gradual pace with a gentle incline. Then, you will follow the ridge and arrive at the place where paths from Pheriche and Dingboche intersect.
You will then continue the trek through a steep path and arrive in Dhugla. You can take a short break in Dhugla and observe the beautiful surroundings. The beautiful view of Mount Ama Dablam will keep you mesmerized. After a short break you will trek along the relatively flat surface. Trekking while feeling the crisp air of the region and making your way through mesmerizing landscapes are truly enchanting. After walking on a winding path that goes through both the valley and steppes you will finally arrive in Lobuche. Then, you can head towards your teahouse and get a much needed rest.
Day 07: Trek from Lobuche to Gorak Shep and Everest Base Camp
Lobuche Elevation: 4,940 m / 16,207 ft
Gorak Shep Elevation: 5,164 m / 16,942 ft
Everest Base Camp Elevation: 5,364 m / 17,598 ft
Trek Duration: 6 to 8 hours
Your destination for today is Gorak Shep. In addition, you will also explore Everest Base Camp. The adventure begins early in the morning. The trail towards Gorakshep is more remote. You will pass through barren and rocky trails on this day and finally make it to Gorakshep.
After arriving in Gorakshep you will have your lunch. Soon afterward, you will make your way towards Everest Base Camp. After making your way through steep and rugged terrains you will reach base Camp of Everest. You can spend some time enjoying the stunning views from Everest Base Camp, celebrate your achievement of successfully reaching there and then trek back to Gorak Shep. For the night you will stay in Gorak Shep.
Day 08: Hike to Kala Patthar and Trek to Chukkung
Kala Patthar Elevation: 5,644 meters/18,517 feet
Chukkung Elevation: 4,730 meters/15,518 feet
Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours
We will wake up before dawn today and hike to the stunning Kala Patthar viewpoint. Gradually ascending from Gorakshep we will make our way through the rugged trails towards the Kala Patthar. From the top of this vantage point you can relish the magical views of Everest and other neighboring mountains bathed in the golden sunrise.
After a rewarding and memorable time in Kala Patthar, we will start to descend. Retracing our footsteps, we will arrive at Gorakshep. Before continuing the trek, we will stay for a while in this final settlement of the Everest region for food and rest.
Fueling up with the nutritious meals, we will again start to walk following the trails that lead us toward Chhukung. En route, we will pass through the villages like Dzongla and Lobuche. After finally arriving at Chhukung, we will settle in at one of the best available teahouses in the village.
Day 09: Rest Day in Chukkung for Acclimatization
Overnight: Guesthouse
Acclimatization is a must at this height. A worthwhile rest in Chukkung will help us make a successful climb. All activities today are for altitude gain and to prepare ourselves to confront the challenges in the days ahead. But a relaxed day doesn't mean complete inactivity.
Light walks around Chukkung village are suggested. Short hikes help our bodies cope with altitudes more efficiently. The towering peaks like Lhotse and Nuptse around us can afford plenty of breathtaking views to enjoy during our walks.
This is a good time to look at your gear and become familiar with what you'll be using for the climb. Chukkung is also a great place to spend a night, which affords us additional acclimatization and some well-needed rest. By the end of the day, we'll be physically and mentally prepared to continue to Island Peak Base Camp.
Day 10: Trek from Chukkung to Island Peak Base Camp
Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours
Overnight: Tent Camp
On this day, you’ll start the journey towards Island Peak Base Camp from Chukkung. Normal trekking takes 6 to 7 hours through dramatic alpine landscapes composed of rugged glacial valleys.
We will be surrounded by giant peaks all the time, and Ama Dablam and Makalu add more thrill to the trail. The trek really challenges your endurance but also gives you a sense of isolation and the beauty of the Himalayas wilderness.
After arriving at Base Camp at 5,200 meters, we overnight stay in our tent camp. Resting here is very important to conserve energy for the summit push. By the end of the day, we will get ready for this thrilling journey.
Day 11: Summit Island Peak and Return to Chukkung
Trek Duration: 9 to 10 hours
Overnight: Guesthouse
We’ll summit on this day. We’ll start in the pre-dawn hours as we make our way to the 6,189m summit of Island Peak. This trek lasts approximately 9 to 10 hours as we ascend and then return down to Chukkung.
The climb is steep and requires full focus, but the reward is spectacular. After reaching the summit, we're met with breathtaking 360° views of the Himalayan mountain range. It includes amazing views of Everest, Lhotse, and beyond.
We can celebrate this as a lifetime achievement. After taking in the views around, we carefully make our way downstairs to return to Chukkung by evening.
Day 12: Chukkung to Pangboche.
Trek Duration: 6 to 7 hours
Overnight: Guesthouse
To this day, start by departing from Chukkung to Pangboche. You can start the trail on a downhill path as we make our way through the beautiful Imja Valley. As you move ahead, you’ll move from the high-altitude mountain region and move closer to the lush green landscapes surrounding the Namche Area.
You’ll now pass through Sherpa villages, which will give you the last glimpse into the unique local culture of the Everest region. The route also offers wonderful views of the mountain range, which will remind you of the incredible journey experienced on this trek. After a few hours of trekking, you'll reach Pangboche. Then, you’ll continue walking through the familiar trails to Tengboche. It is here that we can briefly rest and enjoy the views of Ama Dablam and Everest.
Finally, after a long day of ups and downs, the path zigzags down. You have a chance to warm up and enjoy the rest of this lively Sherpa town. Reflect on all the great memories on the trek so far. You’ll get ready to rest for the final days of the journey by the evening.
Day 13: Trek from Pangboche to Namche Bazaar
Pangboche Elevation: 3,985 m / 13,074 ft
Namche Bazaar Elevation: 3,440 m / 11,286 ft
Trek Duration: 8 hours
After having a warm breakfast at your teahouse, you will begin the journey heading toward the beautiful Namche Bazaar. You will hike down the valley and pass through the beautiful rhododendron forests. On this day, you will walk down the trail and come across several Sherpa Villages. Many Mani walls, Tibetan monasteries, and Buddhist prayer flags can be seen along the way.
You will then pass through the beautiful rhododendron forests, feeling the peaceful ambiance of nature. Then, you will cross the bridge over the serene Dudh Koshi River. Soon afterward, you will cross the tranquil pine forest and make your way toward Namche Bazaar while witnessing the stunning views. On this day, you will stay at your designated teahouse in Namche Bazaar.
Day 14: Trek from Namche Bazaar to Lukla
Namche Bazaar Elevation: 3,440 m / 11,286 ft
Lukla Elevation: 2,860 m / 9,383 ft
Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours
On this day you will make your way towards Lukla. Your journey starts early in the morning after breakfast at Namche Bazaar. You will pass through the beautiful trails along the banks of the Dudh Koshi River. The beauty of picturesque Sherpa Villages is ethereal, and trekking while getting glimpses of the local life is the most intriguing part of this day. You will pass through the lush green forest and several village settlements and finally arrive in Lukla. On this day you will stay overnight at a teahouse in Lukla.
Day 15: Flight from Lukla to Kathmandu
Lukla Elevation: 2,860 m / 9,383 ft
Kathmandu Elevation: 1,400 m / 4,593 ft
Flight Duration: 35 to 40 minutes
On this day you will fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla. You will head towards Lukla Airport and take a flight towards the capital city. The stunning views of hills, mountains and towns will keep you immersed throughout the 35 to 40 minute flight. After landing in Kathmandu, we will drop you off at your hotel. You can then rest in your leisure time. In the evening, you can stroll around the streets of Kathmandu or visit the local markets if you like shopping.

What are the expected weather conditions and temperatures during the Island Peak Climbing?
The most recommended times for Island peak climbing are spring and autumn. During the spring season, the temperatures in the lower elevation can range from 15 °C to 18 °C. Similarly, in higher zones, the daytime temperature can be -10 °C to -15 °C. At night time, the temperature drops upto -20 °C In autumn season the temperature at lower zones ranges from 12 °C to 17 °C. In the higher zones the temperatures hover around -10 °C in the daytime. The temperature can drop upto -20 °C to -25 °C at night time.
In the winter season, (December to February) the weather is very cold. The temperature at this time is -10 °C to -20 °C during the day. At night time, the temperatures can drop significantly anywhere between -20 to -30 °C.
During the summer/monsoon season (June to August), the weather is highly unpredictable. The visibility can be low because of the heavy rainfall and fog. In addition, navigating is difficult because of the slippery and muddy trails. The day time temperature in lower zones can be around 10 °C to 20 °C in the lower zones. In higher elevations, the temperature can be around 0 °C to -5 °C in the daytime and drops upto -15 °C in nighttime.
Preparation for Island Peak Climbing
How challenging is it to climb Island Peak?
Island Peak climbing is considered moderately difficult and graded as 2B or PD in alpine grading. You need to have basic mountaineering skills and should have enough stamina to tackle trekking and climbing difficulties. While the climb is considered suitable for novice climbers, it is also important to have skills like walking with crampons, using ascenders, rope climbing, and abseiling. In addition, the remote and rugged terrains and high altitude can add to the challenge. So, you need to be well prepared for a successful ascent.
What level of fitness is necessary for Island Peak Climbing?
Island peak climbing requires a good level of physical fitness because during this exciting adventure you will be trekking as well as mountaineering. You need to have enough strength to climb while also handling ice axes and ropes. Similarly, you will traverse varied terrains of Everest Region on this journey and you must be fit enough to walk for 6 to 7 hours on average.
How Can I Prepare for Island Peak?
Preparing for Island Peak climbing requires both physical and mental preparation.
Physical Preparation
You can include strength and cardio vascular exercises for developing the endurance required for trekking.
Cardiovascular Endurance: You will be trekking and climbing for long hours, so you can build strength and endurance by including cardiovascular in your schedule a few weeks before starting the journey. Some of the exercises that you can include into your routine are jogging, swimming, cycling, climbing the stairs etc.
Strength Training Exercises
The strength training exercises enhance the stability and endurance. In addition, when you have strong strength, you can prepare better for the physical demands of the trek. Some examples of strength training exercises that you can incorporate into your routine are lunges, squats, push-ups, pull ups, planks etc.
Hiking Practice

What is the cost of the Island Peak Climbing Package?
Island Peak Climbing Package cost starts from US $2100 to $2200. All the ground transportation, domestic flights, special permits, first aid box, salary and insurance of guides and porter are included within the package. In addition, the cost of food (Three Board Meals, Tea, Coffee, Seasonal Fruits) and accommodations are also covered by the package. Similarly, we also provide Duffel bags, Sleeping Bags, Down Jackets, and Trekking Poles if required.
What are the possible personal expenses during the trip?
There are some personal expenses that can arise during the journey which are not covered by the package. Some of the personal expenses during the Island Peak Climbing Trip can be additional snacks, hot shower, charging electronics, and boiled water.
Can I use credit cards to pay for personal expenses during trekking?
It is highly recommended that you bring cash while trekking or climbing in Nepal. Many teahouses and local markets along the trail only accept cash as payment. During the journey, you might want to make some purchases and in remote areas, the only mode of payment is cash. So, you can exchange money and withdraw from city areas as there aren’t reliable ATM’s available in remote areas. So, it is crucial to bring cash during the journey.
Food and Accommodation
How is the accommodation along the trail?
During Island Peak climbing, you will stay in teahouses in most part of the journey, and when you make it to Base Camp, you will stay at a tented camp. During Island Peak climbing, you will stay over at different places in the Everest Region like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Pheriche, Lobuche, Gorakshep and Dingboche. In these scenic places, you will stay in a teahouse or lodge.
The locals of the Khumbu Region mainly operate the teahouses/ lodges. You will get a cozy room, with a bed, blankets and a pillow. You will get a good rest and also receive warm hospitality from the owners which will enhance your experience. In addition, you will also meet other trekkers and get a chance to develop friendships by sharing interesting stories and experiences. Likewise, your stay will be at a tented camp in the island peak base camp.
Do Tea Houses along the trail provide a Hot Shower facility?
Yes, teahouses along the trail provide a hot shower facility at an extra cost. You can ask the owner of the teahouse for the hot water, and they will provide it to you as per your request. Usually, teahouses can charge from US $3 to $6 for hot showers.
Is Wi-Fi available along the trails of the Everest Region?
Yes, the teahouses of Everest Region provide wi-fi facilities but to get the service you have to pay extra. However, the signal can be weak as you move to the higher elevations. Similarly, if you are looking for better coverage, then you can purchase a local SIM card. Usually, the teahouses can charge US $4 to $8 for the internet service.
What kind of foods are served along the trails?
You will find a variety of dishes that are served along the teahouses in the Everest Region. Dal Bhat, a traditional Nepali dish is served by almost all the teahouses. It is a fulfilling dish and served warm. Trekkers and locals love Dal Bhat and it is one of the most preferred choices of meals during the journey. In addition, many tea houses also serve dishes like Momo, Noodles Soup, Porridge, Sandwiches, Thukpa, Eggs, Roti, Porridge, Bread etc. Similarly, during your stay in camp, our kitchen staff will prepare fresh and nutritious food for you.
Is bringing water purification tablets necessary?
Yes, you can bring water purification tablets. There are natural spring water or taps found along the trails. However, drinking it directly without treatment is not recommended. So, you can carry the purification tablets. In addition, we recommend taking suggestions from the guide about water purification. Similarly, you can also find boiled water at tea houses along the way at tea houses. You can carry a thermos bottle and fill the hot water in teahouses.

How can I identify symptoms of Altitude Sickness?
Altitude sickness is one of the major concerns during Island Peak Climbing. During the journey to Island Peak, you will trek to varied altitude zones, and to ensure a safe and smooth journey, adapting to high altitude is important. You will trek to places like Gorakshep, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar. In addition, you will also make your way to Island Peak Base Camp and ascent Island Peak.
If you cannot adapt to the changing altitude in the higher zones, then there is a probability of experiencing altitude sickness. So, it is important to know about the symptoms and your body’s reaction to the changing altitude. The symptoms of altitude sickness are:
